Gardening

We had a very busy weekend at the homestead. We ate pizza, watched a lot of movies, went shopping, and worked on the yard( I did a lot of prunning). One of the movies that we went out to see was Premonition. It reminded me of Ground hog day, a funny movie that I really like, except this movie was sad and difficult to follow. I do not recommend this movie for those that like up beat movies.

One of things that I did at the farm was prepare the veggie garden for planting. I tilled the soil and made the win rows. There is nothing in this world when it comes to food like a home grown tomato, pepper, green bean, potatoe, or corn. Vegetable stand produce comes close, but I prefer home grown. The taste of home grown veggies is superb. Unfortunately I did not get to plant the garden last year, but this year I've got a good start. Alicia likes blueberrys a lot so I bought her a blueberry bush earlier this year, but I forgot to put a cage around the bush and the deer have been eating the tender new growth. I need to get on this.

And time goes on. Jorge

Wow Jorge,

Great looking garden/vegie bed!
I agree about homegrown vegies. However, I have never grown vegies before.
I wanted to do this with the kids for homeschooling, and still may. One hold-back for me is I think the soil all around my house is very high in Lead. These old New England houses, (mine was built in 1887), are covered in old lead paint which has been scraped and blasted away over the years.

Also, my flower garden keeps me plenty budsy.

When my Dad remarried, after my mother died when I was 12, my step-mother (whom he met) lived on the east end of Long Island which is known for their produce and vineyards. My new mom, aka "The Vegetable Lady" used to always bring back fresh produce from the farm stands out east on her way home from work. This is how I came to like veggies. Which was a good addition to our diet, as my dad used to bring home fresh bread from the bakery where he was scrubbing pots.

The vegetable lady is still my mom today, and my kid's Grandma. She's trying to help me get them to eat their vegies too!

I wish you luck with the garden!

Bon apetit! LPK

L. Growing veggies is a good project for kids. The only thing is that it would be about a 3 month project. You can get your soil tested or you can bring in some soil and build up a bed.

Sorry about your childhood. Your stepmom sounds nice. Jorge

I went blueberry pick with my kids for the first time in NY w/ my aunt. Even though we picked almost $40 in berries, I think the kids ate that much while picking. Celeste was only about 3 years old and her bucket was always empty. She just walked behind someone with a full bucket and help lighten their load! When is blueberry season in New England? Who wants to go???

Can we lead test our soil some how? I would like to know if doing a veggie garden is a good idea for my backyard. Anyone know???

Okay, so I need to read the comments before I write? The question is, How can I test my soil? Where do I buy the stuff to test it, or who do I hire to figure it out? I would love fresh tomatos this year. I also need a simple system to water the plants. I know I don't have time to drag a hose out every time and walk up the hill to water the plants.

O, I'll go Blueberry picking. Kids also help in life sometimes.

Yes, usually there are places to test your soil. Remind next week and I'll help you look for a place.

The watering system can be done. Also remind me.

Take Care, Jorge

Hey Jorge,

Thanks.
Yeah, I lucked out with a really good stepmother. She was an only child. My dad died about 7 years ago, and her parents died a little earlier than that. she has no close family and neither do my sister and I. So it's really just the three of us these days and my two kids for family. Life is wierd sometimes, but it's the best game in town!

I'm glad you're coming for a visit and any info you help O with re: vegie gardening, I would appreciate too. Many people have told me about the raised beds. So I know this is an option. I've also heard mixed reviews on container gardening - especially regarding tomatos.
